After careful consideration, the Canadian Society of Transplantation is making the difficult decision to cancel the in-person meeting of the 2020 Canadian Transplant Summit, which was scheduled for late September in Winnipeg.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold, the CST is mindful of minimizing the health impacts and avoid adding stress for participants and the wider communities that could be associated with attending the conference. The CST Board and planning team felt that proceeding as planned for this year would not be feasible considering the risks and uncertainties surrounding the evolving pandemic.
Please also allow us time to process full registration fee refunds for the members who may have already registered for the Summit.
Our mission remains to connect our members with cutting edge science and leading clinical practices that can be used to advance the practice and science of transplantation in Canada. In order to fulfill this goal, we are currently developing ways to move the Transplant Summit and the Pre-Summit Fellows Symposium to a virtual platform. More information on this will be provided in the coming weeks.
Despite the current situation, the CST feels it is important to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of our peers and continue to support trainees in their research. As such, the CST Grants and Awards will proceed this year. However, being mindful of the added stress the health care community is currently under due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are extending the nominations deadlines to May 31, 2020. The Grants and Awards committee and planning team are considering options for the awards presentation.
We recognize the Summit is an exciting event that many look forward to each year and news of its cancellation will no doubt be disappointing. The CST strongly feels this is the correct decision given the current information about this unprecedented situation.
